Who should take this course:

If you like people, have a passion for scuba diving and want an extraordinary life – become a PADI Instructor. Teaching scuba diving allows you to share your love of the aquatic world with others while doing what you enjoy – being in, around and under water. PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors are the most sought-after diving professionals around the world because they’ve completed the program that sets the standard for training dive professionals. You’ll earn your PADI Instructor rating through hard work and commitment, but you’re rewarded with a job that lets you share incredible underwater adventures with others – transforming their lives for the better and enriching yours.

To qualify for the Instructor Development Course (IDC) you must:

  • Be certified as a PADI Divemaster (or equivalent) or Instructor with another agency
  • Have been certified for at least one year and have logged 100 dives to complete the PADI Instructor Exam
  • Have completed Emergency First Response (or equivalent) within the past 2 years
  • Have a medical evaluation by a physician that is less than 1 year old
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be an Emergency First Response Instructor

What to expect:

First you will start with the Emergency First Response (EFR) Instructor Course. Then you will move to the Instructor Development Course (IDC), which is made up of two parts - the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course. Upon successful completion of the entire IDC the Instructor Candidate will go on to challenge the PADI Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to earning a PADI Instructor certification.

During the IDC, you will learn all about the PADI system, programs, standards and procedures as well as the business side of diving, risk management, and marketing. Considerable time is devoted to teaching you how to teach SCUBA in the class, dry workshops, confined and open water.

Required Course Materials:

  • PADI Instructor Crew Pack
  • PADI Dive Theory eLearning Course
  • Complete Scuba Kit and Personal Equipment

Preparation:

IMPORTANT – Be sure to do the following prior to your IDC:

  • Complete your on-line IDC eLearning course
  • Complete the PADI Dive Theory eLearning course. If you know this material, you should do very well on the written theory exams (Physics, physiology, skills & environment, equipment, and RDP’s). If you do not know this material – you should not expect to pass the exams.
  • Another good practice for theory is to re-take the Divemaster exams. These things combined will ensure your dive theory knowledge is up to par. Please do not expect to be taught this material at the IDC – there is not enough time, and this is pre-requisite material.
  • Review the PADI Standards
  • Know how to tie the following knots: bowline, sheet bend and 2 half-hitches. Look in the Advanced manual – Search & recovery section.
  • Be proficient with your SCUBA skills. You will be expected to have “demonstration quality” skills. There is a skill circuit located in the Divemaster section of your Instructor manual.
  • Know how to perform a rescue of an unconscious diver at the surface while providing rescue breaths.
  • Practice in the same gear you plan to use during the course. Your gear should be in working order and be a complete set, including signaling devices.

Schedule:

We begin the full IDC on Sunday with the Emergency First Response Instructor Course. Monday/Tuesday is the Assistant Instructor portion of the course. Wednesday – Sunday is the Open Water Scuba Instructor portion of the course.

Typical days run from 8am until 8pm. There is little free time during the IDC.

The IDC will be held in a classroom setting, indoor/outdoor dry workshop areas, and confined/open water locations.

Instructor Exam:

The PADI Instructor Exam is the final step to becoming a PADI Scuba Instructor. A PADI Examiner will come to a location decided on by them or we can assist you with locating a nearby exam location. During the exam you will be asked to teach a skill in the classroom, one in the confined water and 2 in the open water. You will also perform a rescue of an unconscious diver at the surface, pass a 5-part theory exam and 50 question standards and procedures exam.
