Public Safety Diver

Public Safety Divers conduct a variety of important and potentially stressful underwater tasks (Victim Rescue, Evidence or Body Recovery, Underwater Investigations, and much more) Public Safety Divers are typically in emergency services (Fire Department, Police Department, or Emergency Medical Services) and couple their job experience with specialized dive training to carry out these underwater activities in a safe and effective manner.

What You Will Learn:

The PADI Public Safety Diver course is designed to familiarize divers with the knowledge, skills, organization, planning, procedures, techniques, and hazards of public safety diving. This course covers several key topics that include:

  • Specialized public safety diving equipment
  • Scene handling
  • Communication procedures
  • Search patterns
  • Witness handling
  • Victim and self-rescue techniques
  • Diver stress
  • Diving first aid and O2 procedures
  • Rapid response techniques

Water skills learned are team diving, roles of the primary diver, safety diver, 90 percent diver, tender, and supervisor.

This program uses proven field techniques and meets and addresses both important Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines found in NFPA 1006 and 1670.

PublicDiver Prerequisites:

  • 18 years of age
  • PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or qualifying certification
  • PADI Rescue Diver or qualifying certification 

You may also need to take ancillary programs (PADI Dry Suit Diver, Full Face Mask Diver, Black Water Diver ,Underwater Navigator Diver, and Search and Recovery Diver for example) to be fully prepared to carry out  public safety diving operations in your region's conditions.

Materials & Equipment You need:

  • Two cutting devices (Shears, Knife)
  • Two scuba cylinders (80 cubic feet or larger)
  • Two surface signaling device (Whistle, Light)
  • All personal standard dive equipment
  • PADI Public Safety Diver student manual
  • Personal flotation device (PFD)
  • Recommended: PADI Rescue Diver Manual and The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving
